THE CAR
From the personal collection of Pedal to the Metal's owner: a rare, low-production, numbers matching 1978 Plymouth Road Runner, one of just 1,357 built that year. This Road Runner is also one of only 617 equipped with the optional Super Pak, which includes a six-piece wheel-opening flare kit, front and rear spoilers, and quarter-window louvers. While a 318 V-8 was standard, this model boasts the optional 360-cubic-inch engine. With fewer than 45,000 original miles, the car has been beautifully restored with new paint, graphics, and an interior refresh, making it a standout example of late-Seventies American muscle.
POWERTRAIN
This Plymouth Road Runner is powered by its original 360-cubic-inch two-barrel V-8 engine, which remains unrestored. The carburetor has been replaced with a remanufactured Holley two-barrel, while upgrades include a new water pump, fuel pump, mini-starter, and a fresh power steering pump. The factory Lean Burn System was replaced with a more reliable vacuum advance-controlled distributor, carefully wired using an earlier factory harness. The engine has also been treated to a full tune-up, new valve cover gaskets, and Mopar blue paint for a refreshed appearance. The powertrain includes a smooth-shifting A999 three-speed automatic transmission and an 8-1/4-inch rear axle with a Sure Grip differential and 3.21 gears.
EXTERIOR
During the restoration, this car received new metal in areas prone to rust, such as the lower quarters and sections near the rear wheels. It was repainted in November 2020 using single-stage acrylic enamel, followed by a professional sanding and buffing process that gives the finish a near-perfect 9 out of 10 rating. A new windshield was installed, and new door and roof-rail seals were added. Original glass is still present, though the driver’s door shows minor vertical scratches. NOS taillight lenses, side marker lights, and trim moldings were also fitted.
INTERIOR
The red vinyl interior is in excellent condition, featuring new carpet and recovered bucket seats stitched to the original pattern using NOS materials. The rear seat remains original and untouched, while the headliner was restored with correct NOS red fabric. The dashboard and trim have been stripped and repainted, with all plastic components dyed to match the original red hue. A restored factory AM/FM/8-track radio has been installed, along with upgraded speakers, and a rare NOS chronometer now sits on the dash. All gauges, lights, and heating systems function normally.
CHASSIS
The chassis and suspension have been fully refreshed with new KYG Exel-G gas shocks, stabilizer bar bushings, and end links. The front disc brakes and rear drums were serviced, with resurfaced rotors, new pads, shoes, wheel cylinders, and a rebuilt master cylinder. The original Rallye wheels were restored and mounted with tires purchased in 2014, carefully stored, and recently installed. The car drives smoothly, straight, and without vibrations, ready for the road.
