Coming soon for sale is a true piece of Shelby history: a genuine 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 King of the Road, equipped with the factory-original 428 Cobra Jet and 4-speed manual transmission. Even more remarkable, this car comes from its first and only owner—an 80-year-old enthusiast who purchased it new at a U.S. Ford dealership and kept it ever since.

The car is a real-deal, numbers matching survivor, retaining its original drivetrain, build sheet, lease/loan paperwork, and a complete set of original documents. Finding a 4-speed KR in its original Raven Black color, with full history and single ownership, is an exceptionally rare opportunity.

The legend
Midway through 1968, Shelby introduced the GT500KR (King of the Road), fitted with the newly released 428 Cobra Jet engine. Combining the torque of the 428 Police Interceptor and the performance elements of the 427 side oiler, the Cobra Jet delivered high horsepower and tire-melting torque—making it one of the most revered Ford big blocks ever. This KR retains its original engine, the correct RUG-tagged 4-speed transmission, and the date-coded factory carburetor.

This particular example has never been restored and remains largely original, with light patina that adds authenticity to its survivor status. It's a museum-grade collector’s piece that has been preserved rather than altered, just as Carroll Shelby intended.

Interior
The interior remains completely original, featuring factory tilt steering, sport deck rear seats, and all working gauges. The odometer reads 67,043 miles, believed to be accurate and confirmed by the original owner. The cabin has been gently cleaned but left untouched to preserve its authenticity. It’s ready for immediate enjoyment or collector display.

Drivetrain
The factory-original 428 Cobra Jet engine, transmission, and rear axle are still present and in excellent mechanical condition. Compression has been checked and is strong. The drivetrain will be fully serviced and fine-tuned by our in-house team prior to delivery. The original carburetor and engine data tag are still in place—rare and valuable components that are increasingly hard to find.
